Bernard Evslin (born April 4, 1922 – died June 4, 1993) was an American writer. He is most famous for his books that retold Greek mythology stories. His works helped many young readers discover these ancient tales.
About Bernard Evslin
Bernard Evslin was born in New Rochelle, New York, on April 4, 1922. He later studied at Rutgers University.
Evslin first worked as a writer for plays and movies. His comedy play, The Geranium Hat, was shown on Broadway in 1959. People generally liked it. He also wrote movie scripts, including A.k.a. Cassius Clay. He helped write the script for Journey Back to Oz.
In the 1960s, Evslin started writing novels and short stories. His most famous book is "Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths". This book has been translated into many languages. It has sold over ten million copies around the world. Evslin wrote more than seventy books in total. Almost half of these books were for young adults.
Bernard Evslin won many awards for his writing. In 1961, he received the National Education Association Award. He was nominated for another National Education Award in 1975. He also won an award for a television documentary. In 1968, his book Hercules won the Washington Irving Children's Book Choice Award.
He was married to Dorothy Evslin, who was also a writer and teacher. They wrote two mythology books together: The Greek Gods and Heroes & Monsters of Greek Myth. They also worked with Ned Hoopes on these books. Bernard and Dorothy had four children: Lee, Tom, Pamela, and Janet.
His Death
Bernard Evslin passed away on June 4, 1993. He was 71 years old. He died from a heart attack in Kauai, Hawaii.
