Bernard John Maguire was an important Irish politician, a farmer, and a business leader. He was known for serving in Dáil Éireann, which is the main part of Ireland's parliament.
Bernard Maguire first tried to become a politician in the June 1927 general election, but he was not elected that time. However, he was successful later that year. He was first elected as a Teachta Dála (TD) – that's what members of Dáil Éireann are called – for the Leitrim–Sligo area in the September 1927 general election. He was part of the Fianna Fáil political party.
He was re-elected for the same area in the 1932 and 1933 general elections. In the 1937 general election, he was elected for the Leitrim area and won again for that area in the 1938 general election.
In 1939, Bernard Maguire decided to leave the Fianna Fáil party. After that, he ran for election as an Independent TD, meaning he didn't belong to any specific political party. He was elected again in the 1943 general election. He continued to be an independent TD for Leitrim in the 1944 general election and for Sligo–Leitrim in the 1948 general election.
He lost his seat in the 1951 general election, which means he was not re-elected. But he managed to get his seat back in the 1954 general election. Sadly, he lost his seat for the last time in the 1957 general election.
