Bernard Mendy (born 20 August 1981) is a French former professional footballer. He played as a right-back, which means he was a defender who also helped with attacks. People knew him for his amazing speed and how often he would run forward to help score goals. After his playing career, he became an assistant manager for Paris Saint-Germain Féminine, a women's football team.

Bernard Mendy started his professional football journey with Caen in the 1998–99 season. He then moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2000, where he played for eight years. During this time, he also spent a season on loan at Bolton Wanderers in England. Later, he played for teams like Hull City and OB. He returned to France to play for Brest in 2012. Towards the end of his career, he played for Indian clubs Chennaiyin FC and East Bengal FC, as well as a Cypriot team called AEL Limassol.

Bernard Mendy was born on August 20, 1981, in a town called Évreux in France.

Playing Career

Bernard Mendy was a big fan of Paris Saint-Germain since he was a child. His dream came true in 2000 when he joined PSG from SM Caen. He showed a lot of talent in his first two seasons at PSG.

Time in England

In 2002, he was loaned to Bolton Wanderers in England for a year. Fans there liked his fast and attacking style of play. When he returned to PSG, the new manager, Vahid Halilhodzic, gave him a chance to be a regular player. Mendy had one of his best seasons that year. He even played his first game for the French national team against Brazil.

In 2008, Mendy helped PSG win the Coupe de la Ligue final. He came on as a substitute and scored the winning goal from a penalty kick, making the score 2–1.

Later, on June 20, 2008, Mendy joined Hull City, a team that had just been promoted to the top English league. He signed a three-year deal. The manager, Phil Brown, knew Mendy from their time together at Bolton. Mendy scored his first goal for Hull City against Manchester United. It was a clever lob over the goalkeeper, even though Hull City lost the game 4–3. He left Hull City in May 2010.

Later Career

On February 9, 2011, Mendy signed a contract with Odense Boldklub, a Danish club. He played there for about a year and a half. On June 25, 2012, Mendy returned to France. He signed a two-year contract with Stade Brestois as a free player.

In 2014, Mendy was chosen in the first round of the ISL International Draft. He signed with Chennaiyin FC in India. He played his first game for them on October 15, which they won 2–1 against FC Goa.

In January 2016, Mendy joined another Indian team, East Bengal, for the 2015–16 season. He returned to Chennaiyin for his final season in 2016. He played 9 games and scored two goals. Chennaiyin had a tough season, finishing 7th. Bernard Mendy decided to end his playing career after the 2016 ISL season.

Coaching Career

In December 2017, Bernard Mendy became an assistant manager for Paris Saint-Germain Féminine, which is the women's team of Paris Saint-Germain. In 2018, the main manager left before a big final. Mendy stepped in as the temporary manager. He led the team to a 1–0 victory against Lyon, who had won the cup six times in a row! This was a very important win for the team. After that, he continued his role as assistant manager.

Personal Life

Bernard Mendy is married to Lucy Hughes, who used to be a gymnast. They have three daughters together.
