He was one of six men who were executed in Mountjoy Prison, Dublin on March 14, 1921. He is also known as one of "The Forgotten Ten".
Who Was Bernard Ryan?
Bernard Ryan was born in Dublin, Ireland. His parents were Joseph and Anne Ryan. People often called him Bertie. In 1911, he lived with his mother and two sisters, Katie and Sarah, in Glasnevin, Dublin. He also had a foster brother named Paddy.
Bernard went to St. Gabriels National School. He was learning to be a tailor, which means he was training to make clothes. He was only 20 years old when he died.
His Trial and Execution
On February 24, 1921, Bernard Ryan and three other men – Patrick Doyle, Thomas Bryan, and Frank Flood – faced a special military court. They were accused of trying to ambush soldiers in Drumcondra, Dublin on January 21, 1921. The court found them guilty of serious charges related to fighting against the government.
On March 14, 1921, Bernard Ryan, along with these three men and two others, Thomas Whelan and Patrick Moran, were executed at Mountjoy Prison. Outside the prison, a very large crowd of over 20,000 people gathered to protest against the executions.
The Forgotten Ten
Bernard Ryan is part of a group of men known as "The Forgotten Ten." These ten men were executed in Mountjoy Prison between 1920 and 1921. One of the most famous among them was Kevin Barry.
For many years, these men were buried in the prison grounds. However, in 2001, Bernard Ryan and the other nine men were moved from their graves. They were given a full State Funeral, which is a very important ceremony held for people who have served their country. Bernard Ryan is now buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.
