Bernard VII of Lippe (born December 4, 1428 – died April 2, 1511) was a very important ruler in a place called Lippe. He was in charge from when he was just a baby until he died, making him one of the longest-ruling noblemen in European history! People called him "the Bellicose" because he was involved in many fights and conflicts.
Bernard's Early Life
Bernard was the oldest son of Lord Simon IV of Lippe and his wife, Margaret of Brunswick-Grubenhagen. He became the Lord of Lippe in 1429, even before his first birthday. Because he was so young, his uncle Otto became his regent. A regent is someone who rules for a child until they are old enough to rule themselves. Otto also looked after Bernard as his guardian.
When Otto died in 1446, Bernard's great-uncle, Archbishop Dietrich II of Cologne, took over as regent. Dietrich had a special helper in Lippe named Johann Möllenbeck, who managed things for him.
Conflicts and Changes
In 1444, Bernard made an agreement with Duke Adolph I of Cleves-Mark. In this deal, Bernard gave Adolph half ownership of the city of Lippstadt. This city had been promised to Cleves earlier as a kind of loan security.
At the same time, Bernard joined an alliance that led to a big conflict called the Feud of Soest against Archbishop Dietrich II of Cologne. In 1447, Dietrich brought in an army from Bohemia. This army caused a lot of damage in the countryside of Lippe. They even destroyed the town of Blomberg. The Bohemian army also tried to capture the cities of Lippstadt and Soest, but they were not successful.
After this conflict ended in 1449, Bernard moved to Blomberg Castle. Later, in 1468, he moved to Detmold. At that time, Detmold was the smallest city in Lippe, with only about 350 people. Bernard made Detmold Castle bigger. You can still see an old inscription in the castle tower from 1470 that reminds us of his work.
Bernard was involved in many different conflicts against various enemies. He often changed who he was allied with. For example, in 1469, he supported Landgrave Louis II, Landgrave of Lower Hesse against Louis's own brother, Henry III, Landgrave of Upper Hesse. But in 1464, Bernard supported his own brother, Prince-Bishop Simon III of Paderborn, against Louis II of Lower Hesse. They were fighting over Calenberg Castle in what was called the Hesse-Paderborn Feud.
