Who Was Bernardo Berro?
Bernardo Berro belonged to the National Party, also known as the Blancos. This was one of the main political groups in Uruguay at the time.
Before becoming president, he held another important role. He was the President of the Senate of Uruguay. He served in this position in 1852 and again from 1858 to 1859.
First Time as President (Provisional)
Berro first became the leader of Uruguay for a short time in 1852. This was a provisional, or temporary, government. It happened when the National Party briefly gained power.
President of Uruguay (Second Term)
In 1860, Berro led the National Party back into power. During his presidency, he tried to bring together the different political groups in Uruguay. This was a challenging task. Sometimes, even members of his own party and government disagreed with his efforts to unite the country.
His Death
Sadly, Bernardo Berro was murdered on February 19, 1868. On the same day, former president Venancio Flores was also assassinated.
