Bernardo Ortiz de Montellano was an important Mexican writer, poet, and teacher. He was born in Mexico City on January 3, 1899. He passed away in Mexico City on April 13, 1949. He is known for his poetry, essays, and for helping to create and edit several important literary magazines in Mexico.

Early Life and Education
Bernardo Ortiz de Montellano went to the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria (National Preparatory School). This school helped prepare students for university.
Later, he became a teacher. He taught at the Escuela de Verano (Summer School). This school was part of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), one of Mexico's biggest universities. He also worked for the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP), which is Mexico's Public Education Ministry. There, he reviewed books.
Literary Groups and Magazines
Bernardo Ortiz de Montellano was a member of a literary group called Nuevo Ateneo de la Juventud. This group was started in 1918. Other famous writers like Jaime Torres Bodet and José Gorostiza were also part of it. The members of this group wrote for different magazines and journals.
In 1928, he helped start a magazine called "Contemporáneos". He was the director of this magazine from June 1928 until December 1931. He also sometimes edited another literary magazine called "Letras de México". This magazine was published from 1937 to 1947. He was also the chief editor of "El Trovador". He also helped create the Cuadernos Americanos group.
