Bernardo Soto Alfaro: A President for Costa Rica
Bernardo Soto Alfaro became the President of Costa Rica in 1885. This happened after his father-in-law, President Próspero Fernández, sadly passed away while still in office.
Stepping Aside for Peace
After a tough election to choose the next president, Bernardo Soto made a big decision. He chose to step aside from his role on November 7, 1889. This was a way to help bring the country together after the election.
He didn't officially resign. Instead, the third vice president, Carlos Durán Cartín, took over as acting President. Carlos Durán served until the end of the presidential term.
