Alajuela is a vibrant city in Costa Rica. It is the second largest city in the country. Alajuela is also the capital of the Alajuela Province. People often call it the "City of Mangoes" because of its many mango trees.

This city is famous for being the birthplace of Juan Santamaría. He is a national hero of Costa Rica. Another important person born here is Carlos Luis Fallas, a well-known writer. The main international airport of Costa Rica, Juan Santamaría International Airport, is located just south of Alajuela's downtown area.
