Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bernhard Wilhelm Maria Pankok (born May 16, 1872, in Münster; died April 5, 1943, in Baierbrunn) was a German artist and designer. He was known for his paintings, drawings, and especially his furniture and book designs. His style mixed ideas from Art Nouveau (a fancy art style) and the International Style (a simpler, modern style). His designs for furniture and books, like the catalog for the German part of the 1900 World's Fair in Paris, made him very famous.

Biography

Bernhard Pankok studied art in Düsseldorf from 1889 to 1891. He learned from teachers like Heinrich Lauenstein and Adolf Schill.

In 1892, he opened his own studio in Munich. He worked as an artist, graphic designer, and illustrator. He drew pictures for popular magazines like Pan and Jugend. He also helped teach his younger brother, Franz Pankok. Bernhard was one of the people who started the United Workshops for Art in Crafts. This group focused on making beautiful and useful everyday items.

In 1901, he married Antoinette Coppenrath. She was the sister of the painter Ferdinand Coppenrath. The next year, Bernhard and Antoinette moved to Stuttgart. In 1907, he joined important art groups. These included the Berlin Secession and the Deutscher Werkbund. These groups brought together many artists and designers.

Soon after, he helped design new buildings for the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart. When the new buildings opened in 1913, he became the first director. He led the academy until 1937.

Bernhard Pankok was a major artist in the Werkbund Exhibition (1914) in Cologne. He was also chosen to be on the board of directors for the Deutscher Künstlerbund. This was another important group for artists. In 1924, he married his second wife, Marianne Geyer.

In 1930, he became a special member of the Munich Secession. Three years later, he was given an honorary membership at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. Even though there was a lot of pressure, he never joined the Nazi Party. In 1942, the State Academy of Fine Arts made him an honorary member again.

In 1973, thirty years after he passed away, the Landesmuseum Württemberg held a big show of his artworks.
