A Look Back: Berrytown's History
How Berrytown Started
Berrytown began in the 1870s, right after the American Civil War. This time was known as the Reconstruction era. During Reconstruction, people worked to rebuild the country, especially in the South. Many formerly enslaved people also started new lives and communities.
The first pieces of land for Berrytown were bought by the leaders of the Little Flock Church. This church was also called the First Colored Baptist Church, and it was located in nearby Anchorage.
Who Was Alfred Berry?
The neighborhood is named after Alfred Berry. He was an early settler who bought a 10-acre (about 40,000 square meters) piece of land in 1874. Many of the first residents of Berrytown worked as servants for the wealthy families living in Anchorage.
Changes Over Time
Berrytown is still mainly an African-American community today. In the 1960s, there were plans to rebuild parts of the neighborhood. This idea was called "urban renewal." However, the people living in Berrytown resisted these plans. Because of their strong community spirit, only the southern part of the neighborhood was expanded.
