Bertha of Burgundy (born in 964 – died on January 16, 1010) was a queen in early French history. She became the Queen consort of the Franks when she married King Robert II. This means she was the wife of the king.
Early Life and First Marriage
Bertha was born in 964. Her father was King Conrad of Burgundy. Her mother was Matilda, who was the daughter of King Louis IV of France. Bertha was named after her grandmother, Bertha of Swabia.
Around the year 983, Bertha married her first husband, Count Odo I of Blois. They had several children together. Some of their children included Theobald II and Odo II.
Marriage to King Robert II
After her first husband, Count Odo I, passed away in 996, Bertha's life changed. Her second cousin, Robert, wanted to marry her. Robert was the oldest son of King Hugh Capet of France.
King Robert had recently ended his first marriage. His father, King Hugh, was not happy about Robert wanting to marry Bertha. This was because Robert and Bertha were related by blood, which is called consanguinity. In those times, marrying a close relative could cause problems with religious leaders.
Despite these concerns, the marriage happened around October 996. This was also around the time King Hugh passed away. After his father's death, Robert became the only king.
Later Life
Bertha was queen consort for a few years. She was an important figure in the royal court during her time. She passed away on January 16, 1010.
