Life as King
Conrad was the son of King Rudolph II. His father was the first ruler to unite the kingdoms of Upper and Lower Burgundy in 933. Conrad's mother was Bertha. She was the daughter of Duke Burchard II of Swabia.
When Conrad's father died in 937, Conrad became King of Burgundy. He was still very young at the time. His future brother-in-law, the German king Otto I, helped him rule. Otto I later became the Holy Roman Emperor. Otto acted as Conrad's regent, meaning he ruled for Conrad until Conrad was old enough.
Under Otto's guidance, Conrad worked closely with the German kings. The Kingdom of Burgundy became very important in Otto I's plans for Italy. This was because of the Great Saint Bernard Pass, a key route through the mountains. Conrad also gained control over important monasteries. These included Lure Abbey, Payerne Priory, Romainmôtier Priory, and Moutier-Grandval Abbey.
A Clever Story
There's a famous story about King Conrad. It was told by a writer named Ekkehard IV. This story might not be completely true, but it's interesting!
The story says that Conrad learned two different groups were coming to attack him. These were the Magyars and the Saracens from Fraxinetum. Conrad sent messengers to both armies. He warned each army about the other one.
His messengers offered help to each invader against the other. Then, they told each army where the other one was. When the Magyars and Saracens met, they fought each other. The Burgundians waited until both sides were tired. Then, Conrad's army attacked. This way, both invading armies were defeated. Many of the captured soldiers were sold into slavery.
Conrad died on October 19, 993. He was buried in the Abbey of Saint-André-le-Bas in Vienne.
Family Life
Conrad married twice and had several children.
His first wife was Adelaide of Bellay. They had at least one daughter:
- Gisela (died 1006), who married Henry II, Duke of Bavaria.
By 966, Conrad married Matilda. She was the daughter of Louis IV of France and Gerberga of Saxony. They had at least four children:
- Bertha (born 964 – died 1016), who married Odo I, Count of Blois, and later Robert II of France.
- Matilda (born 969), who might have married Robert, Count of Geneva.
