Bethany Congregational Church is a special church located in Thomasville, Georgia. It is part of the United Church of Christ. This church has a long history. It was once connected to a school for African American students.
A Place of Worship and Learning
Bethany Congregational Church was started on February 1, 1891. It was founded by the American Missionary Association. The church served as the chapel and worship center for the Allen Normal and Industrial School. This school was an important educational place for African American students. It operated from 1885 until 1933. Even after the school buildings were taken down in 1935, the church remained.
A Historic Landmark
The church is recognized as a very important historical site. On March 7, 1985, Bethany Congregational Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. A Leader's Connection
A famous civil rights leader, Andrew Young, was once the pastor of Bethany Congregational Church. He became the pastor in 1955. Andrew Young had studied religion and earned a special degree for it. He also served as a pastor at Evergreen Congregational Church in a nearby county from 1957 to 1959. That church is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
