Bethany Congregational Church was started on February 1, 1891. It was founded by the American Missionary Association. The church served as the chapel and worship center for the Allen Normal and Industrial School. This school was an important educational place for African American students. It operated from 1885 until 1933. Even after the school buildings were taken down in 1935, the church remained.
