Bethel AME Church is a very old and important church located at 220 Bell Street in Reno, Nevada. It is part of the African Methodist Episcopal faith. This church has been a special place for the African American community in Reno since it was built in 1910. It was a central spot for the first Black families who moved to the area.
Over the years, Bethel AME Church has been much more than just a place of worship. It has been a community center, helping people with many different needs. It even helped people who were going through tough times, especially in a city where people were separated by race.
In the 1960s, during the American civil rights movement, the church played a big role. This movement was a time when people worked hard to get equal rights for everyone. A Historic Landmark
Bethel AME Church is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. This means it is recognized as a special building with a lot of history.
Moving to a New Home
In 1993, the church congregation moved to a new building. This happened under the leadership of Reverend Carey G. Anderson. Their new home is at 2655 N Rock Boulevard in Sparks, Nevada. Even in its new location, the church continues to be a strong and active part of the community. It has offered many helpful programs and services over the years.
