The Temple Beth-El is a very old and important building in Detroit, Michigan. You can find it at 8801 Woodward Avenue. It was built in 1921. This historic building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it is recognized as a special place worth protecting.
What Does Temple Beth-El Look Like?
In 1921, the Jewish community of Detroit needed a new place to worship. Their old building was too small. Many members had also moved to new neighborhoods. So, they bought land at Woodward and Gladstone. They asked Albert Kahn, a famous architect and a member of their community, to design a new temple. The first stone was laid in 1921, and the building was finished in 1922.
The Temple Beth-El building is made of light-colored limestone. It has a flat roof and a classic, grand style. On the side facing Woodward Avenue, there is a huge porch. This porch has eight tall, round columns. These columns frame three big sets of doors. On the side facing Gladstone, there are eight tall, narrow windows. They are framed by large stone supports.
Who Has Owned Temple Beth-El?
Over the years, the Temple Beth-El building has had several owners. Each owner used it for different purposes.
