Discovering Betty Shannon's Life

Betty Shannon's journey began in New York City. She was born on April 14, 1922. Her parents were Vilma Ujlaky Moore and James E. Moore.

Early Life and Education

Betty was a very bright student. She earned a full scholarship to the New Jersey College for Women. There, she studied mathematics. She graduated with high honors, becoming a member of the Phi Beta Kappa society.

Working at Bell Labs

After college, Betty worked at Bell Labs. This was a famous research and development company. She was a numerical analyst. This means she used math to solve problems. At first, she helped with projects on microwaves. Later, she worked on radar systems. She was like a "human computer" for these projects.

Betty also published her own research paper. It was titled "Composing Music by a Stochastic Process." This was a big achievement for a woman at that time. It was rare for a woman to have her name on a research report.

Meeting Claude Shannon

While at Bell Labs, Betty met Claude Shannon. Claude was a brilliant but shy scientist. He found it easy to work with people who were as smart as he was. Betty and Claude got along very well. In 1948, they started dating. They were married in 1949.

Beyond Her Research

Betty Shannon had many interests. She was a member of the Weavers' Guild of Boston. This group focused on the art of weaving. She even served as the Dean of the Guild from 1976 to 1978. She also received an award for her great achievements from the Guild.

Betty and Claude had three children: Robert James, Andrew Moore, and Margarita. They raised their family in Winchester, Massachusetts. Sadly, her oldest son, Robert, passed away in 1998. Betty Shannon died peacefully at her home in Lexington, Massachusetts on May 1, 2017.
