Discovering Bevis, Ohio

Bevis is a quiet area located in the southwestern part of Ohio. Even though it's not a city, it's still a place where people live and have a community. Many small places like Bevis exist across the United States, each with its own unique story.

How Bevis Got Its Name

The history of Bevis is quite interesting! A long time ago, this area was known by a slightly different name: Bevis Tavern. A "tavern" was like an old-fashioned hotel or inn where travelers could stop for a meal and a place to sleep.

In 1835, a post office was opened there, which was a big deal for the community. It meant people could send and receive letters more easily. The name of the post office was Bevis Tavern.

Later, in 1874, the name was officially shortened to just Bevis. The community got its name from a man named Jesse Bevis. He was an important person in the early days of the area, working as both the postmaster (the person in charge of the post office) and the owner of the local hotel. The post office eventually closed in 1903, but the name Bevis stuck around for the community.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

You might be wondering what an "unincorporated community" really is. It's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own separate government. This means it doesn't have its own mayor, city council, or local police department that is separate from the county.

Instead, the services for the area, like roads, police, and fire protection, are usually managed by the larger county government. Many small towns and villages start as unincorporated communities before they grow big enough to form their own local governments.
