Exploring Bible Hill's Past
Bible Hill got its name from a special hill. This hill rises above the river's flood plain. It is located on the grounds of the Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture. This school was once known as the Nova Scotia Agricultural College.
How Bible Hill Got Its Name
For a long time, people thought the hill was named after Matthew Archibald. He lived from 1745 to 1820. Matthew was known for being very religious. He used the Bible a lot. People believed the hill where he lived got its name because of his strong faith. It was even suggested that Joseph Howe helped make the name popular.
However, the real story behind the name is now thought to be different. It likely came from the work of Rev. Dr. William McCullough. He lived from 1811 to 1895.
Interestingly, Rev. McCullough lived in the same house that Matthew Archibald had built. Rev. McCullough was a minister in Truro from 1839 to 1885. He loved giving out Bibles. His father, Dr. Thomas McCullough, helped start the Nova Scotia Bible Society.
Rev. McCullough gave Bibles for free to anyone who wanted one. He did this for almost 50 years. Because of his work, the hill where he lived became known as Bible Hill. It was the place where you could get a Bible for free.
