What is the Bicentennial Lighthouse?
The Bicentennial Lighthouse was designed by Alejandro Cohen. It was built to celebrate Argentina's 200th birthday. The monument has a very modern look. It is an example of "structural expressionism." This means its design shows off its structure.
How the Lighthouse is Built
The main part of the monument is 80 meters tall. It is shaped like a partial helix, which is like a giant spiral. This spiral twists 90 degrees as it goes up.
On top of this concrete tower is an antenna. This antenna makes the total height of the monument 102 meters. At night, the tower lights up with bright LED lights. These lights can change colors.
Inside the tower, there are stairs that go to the top. However, these stairs are not open for visitors.
Exhibition Areas
At the bottom of the monument, there is a large area. It is about 1,500 square meters in size. This space is used for exhibition rooms. There is also an auditorium for events.
Construction and Opening
The Bicentennial Lighthouse took eight months to build. It cost nine million pesos. The monument officially opened on June 2, 2011. At that time, it was still missing some glass panels.
