The Story of Bick's Pickles
How Bick's Started
Bick's began in 1951 near Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was started by farmers George and Lena Bick and their sons, Walter and Thomas. They began pickling cucumbers grown on their own farm, Knollview.
At first, it was a small business. They produced about 60,000 jars of pickles. By 1960, their business had grown a lot. They were making 12 million jars of pickles each year!
Changes Over Time
In 1966, the Bick family sold their business to Kraft Foods Canada. Later, Bick's became part of another company called International Multifoods.
Walter Bick, one of the people who helped start the company, passed away on October 17, 2011. He was 94 years old.
For 50 years, the Bick's pickle plant was a big operation in Scarborough, Ontario. However, some of the pickling work moved to Delhi, Ontario, in 1998. The rest of the production moved to Dunnville, Ontario, in 2001.
Bick's Today
In 2004, The J.M. Smucker Company bought Bick's. This happened after Smucker merged with International Multifoods.
In 2010, Smucker announced that the two Ontario factories would close. This meant that Bick's pickles were no longer made in Canada. Since 2011, Bick's products have been imported from the United States. They are sold in Canada by Smucker's office in Markham, Ontario.
The old Bick's plant at 333 Progress Avenue is now used by a company called Atlantic Packaging. This company works with paperboard and recycling.
