Bick's is a well-known Canadian brand that makes pickles. It started in Scarborough, Ontario. Today, a company from the United States called The J.M. Smucker Co. sells Bick's products in Canada.

The Story of Bick's Pickles

How Bick's Started

Bick's began in 1951 near Toronto, Ontario. A farming family, George and Lena Bick, along with their sons Walter and Thomas, started it. They used cucumbers from their own farm, Knollview, to make pickles.

At first, it was a small business. They made about 60,000 jars of pickles. But the company grew very quickly. By 1960, they were making 12 million jars!

Changes in Ownership

In 1966, the Bick family sold their business. It was bought by Kraft Foods Canada. Later, Bick's became part of another company called International Multifoods.

Walter Bick, one of the people who started the company, passed away on October 17, 2011. He was 94 years old.

Where Bick's Pickles Were Made

For 50 years, the main Bick's factory was a big part of the Scarborough City Centre area. But over time, things changed.

In 1998, the first steps of making pickles, like pickling and brining, moved. These operations went to Delhi, Ontario. Then, in 2001, the rest of the production moved to Dunnville, Ontario.

Bick's Today

In 2004, The J.M. Smucker Company bought Bick's. This happened after Smucker merged with International Multifoods.

By 2010, Smucker announced that the two factories in Ontario would close. This meant that Bick's pickles were no longer made in Canada. Since 2011, Bick's products come from the United States. They are sold in Canada by Smucker's office in Markham, Ontario.

The old Bick's factory building at 333 Progress Avenue is now used by a company called Atlantic Packaging. They work with paperboard and recycling.
