The Story of BICO: A Sweet History
The Barbados Ice Company started in 1901. It was formed when two companies that made ice joined together. For a few years, the company only made ice. In 1910, they added a new part to their business: a cold storage area. This allowed them to keep things very cold.
A big change happened in 1949. That's when BICO started making ice cream! Later, in 1967, they began working with the Barbados Port Authority. In 1976, the company officially changed its name to BICO. After that, BICO stopped making ice and focused on frozen desserts.
BICO Today: Bigger and Better
Today, BICO is a public company. This means many people own small parts of it, over 350 shareholders in total. Most of the money BICO earns comes from selling its tasty ice cream.
In 2007, BICO made its freezer facilities much bigger. They expanded their storage space to almost 1 million cubic feet. This huge freezer space makes BICO one of the largest public cold storage places in the whole Caribbean.
In 2009, something difficult happened. A fire damaged the BICO factory. Because of this, the company had to get its products made by other companies in Canada for a while. BICO has been working hard to rebuild its factory since then.
