What is the History of Big Bottom Farm?
The Big Bottom Farm is found in a town called Dickens. This town is in Allegany County, Maryland. The main farmhouse was built in the mid-1800s. A person named John Jacob Smouse likely built it. His family owned a lot of land in the area.
What Does Big Bottom Farm Look Like?
Big Bottom Farm has many buildings from the 1800s and early 1900s. The oldest building is the brick farmhouse. It has many features from the Greek Revival style.
The Farmhouse Details
The farmhouse has two floors and a sloped roof. It has a two-story section at the back. A third section was added to this back part later. The front of the house has special brickwork. It's called Flemish bond brickwork.
A porch in the Greek Revival style covers the front door. This porch has tall, round columns. It also has a flat roof with an iron fence. A door from the second floor opens onto the top of this porch. The front door has small windows around it.
There was probably another porch at the back of the house. But it has been closed in now. The windows have wooden shutters. Brick chimneys are on each end of the house.
Inside the Farmhouse
Inside, the house has a main hallway with a staircase. There is a large room on each side of the hall. The inside also has Greek Revival style woodwork. This means the wooden decorations are balanced and fancy. The main living room has fluted wood designs. The fireplaces have flat pillars supporting deep shelves.
Other Buildings on the Farm
Besides the main house, the farm has other old buildings. There is a barn from the late 1800s. You can also find a shed for machinery. There is a corn crib for storing corn. A wash house and two chicken coops are also on the property.
Why is Big Bottom Farm Important?
Big Bottom Farm was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The main part of its farmhouse is like other old farmhouses in western Maryland. But its Greek Revival style makes it special. It is unique among buildings in Allegany County, Maryland. Most of its original details are still there.
