Big Cove Creek facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Big Cove Creek is a stream in Pennsylvania, United States. It is about 19.9-mile-long (32.0 km) (about 32 kilometers) and flows into Licking Creek.

Journey of Big Cove Creek

Big Cove Creek starts on the west side of Cove Mountain. This area is close to the Buchanan State Forest.

The creek flows south through a valley. On one side is Cove Mountain, and on the other are Little Scrub Ridge and Scrub Ridge. The creek generally follows U.S. Route 522.

About four miles (6.4 km) from where it begins, the creek flows through McConnellsburg. This is the only main town along its path.

Further south, the creek turns west. It cuts through a gap near Strawberry Ridge and meets Back Run. It then flows through a narrow valley. This valley is between Scrub Ridge and the lower parts of Dickeys Mountain. Other streams like Roaring Run and Spring Run join it here.

At a small place called Big Cove Tannery, Route 522 turns away. Pennsylvania Route 928 then follows the creek south. Soon after, Esther Run flows into Big Cove Creek from the east.

The creek passes through a small part of Buchanan State Forest. It then stays on the west side of the valley. Route 928 climbs away on the east side. Finally, Big Cove Creek joins Licking Creek. This meeting point is north of the town of Dickeys Mountain.

Trout Fishing in Big Cove Creek

In 2017, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission made an exciting announcement. A part of Big Cove Creek near Big Cove Tannery was chosen as a "Keystone Select Stocked Trout Water." This means the creek is stocked with large trout, usually 14 to 20 inches (35 to 50 cm) long. This makes it a great spot for fishing!
