Discover the Big Merino

What is the Big Merino?

The Big Merino is more than just a giant statue. Inside, you'll find a cool gift shop on the ground floor. It's a great place to pick up souvenirs. On the second floor, there's an interesting display all about wool. You can learn how wool is used and why it's so important.

One of the best parts is that visitors can climb right to the top! From there, you can look out through Rambo's eyes. It offers a unique view of the local area around Goulburn.

When Was it Built?

The Big Merino was officially opened a long time ago, on 20 September 1985. Its first home was at No.98 Hume Street in Goulburn. This spot was about 800 metres north-east of where it stands today.

Why Did Rambo Move?

In 1992, a big change happened in Goulburn. The main highway, called the Hume Highway, was rerouted. This meant that cars and buses no longer drove directly through the town. Because of this, the Big Merino started losing many visitors. Before the change, about 40 busloads of tourists stopped there every day!

The Big Move

To bring back visitors, a big decision was made. On 26 May 2007, the Big Merino was carefully moved to a new spot. Its new home is much closer to the Hume Highway. It's now located near a freeway interchange and a service station. This new location makes it much easier for travelers to stop and see Rambo. Today, a car wash stands where Rambo first lived.
