The Big Rib River is an important river located in the middle of Wisconsin. It starts its journey in the northeastern part of Taylor County, specifically from a place called Rib Lake. From there, it flows into Marathon County. Finally, the Big Rib River joins the larger Wisconsin River. The name "Rib River" actually comes from a Native American name, which was translated into English.

Where the River Flows

The Big Rib River travels through several interesting places on its way to the Wisconsin River.

From Source to Junction

The river begins at Rib Lake and then makes its way south. It flows past the town of Rib Falls. After that, it continues towards Marathon City. The river's journey ends when it meets the Wisconsin River. This meeting point is near the northeast side of a famous landmark called Rib Mountain.

A Historical Mystery

The Big Rib River holds a fascinating historical mystery.

The Dells and Father Menard

Below the town of Goodrich, there's a part of the river known as the Dells of the Big Rib River. "Dells" refers to narrow, rocky valleys or rapids. It's believed that these rapids are where a French explorer and missionary named Father René Menard disappeared a very long time ago, in 1661.

Father Menard was trying to reach a group of Huron Indians near a place called Lake Chelsea. He left his travel partner at the rapids to carry some supplies. Sadly, Father Menard was never seen again after that moment. His disappearance remains a mystery of the Big Rib River.
