Discovering Ancient Rock Art

This amazing site is made up of two big rocks. They are called Big Indian Rock and Little Indian Rock. These rocks are located right in the middle of the Susquehanna River.

What Are Petroglyphs?

A petroglyph is a type of ancient art. It is a carving made into a rock. People from long ago used tools to scratch, cut, or peck designs into stone surfaces. These carvings often show animals, people, or symbols. They can give us clues about how ancient people lived and what was important to them.

The Big and Little Indian Rocks

Big Indian Rock is quite large, measuring about 60 feet long and 40 feet wide. It has carvings on all of its sides. Little Indian Rock is a bit smaller, about 38 feet long and 32 feet wide. Its carvings are mainly found on its north side. These carvings are very old and were first studied by experts in 1934.

Who Made These Carvings?

Archaeologists, who are scientists who study ancient cultures, believe that an Algonkian tribe made these petroglyphs. The Algonkian people were Native American groups who lived in many parts of North America. These carvings are like messages left behind by these ancient people. They give us a glimpse into their history and culture.

Protecting History: National Register

Because of their historical importance, the Big and Little Indian Rock Petroglyphs were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The National Register is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect these sites so future generations can also learn from them.
