Ceanothus megacarpus is a type of flowering shrub. It is often called the bigpod ceanothus. This plant is special because it grows naturally only in California. You can find it along California's Central Coast and on the Channel Islands.

What Does Bigpod Ceanothus Look Like?

This plant is a shrub that can grow quite tall. It can reach over 3 meters (about 10 feet) high! It has thick leaves that stay green all year. These leaves are shaped like ovals or rectangles.

Flowers and Fruits

The bigpod ceanothus has small groups of flowers. These flowers are usually white or light purple. They often have dark centers.

After the flowers, the plant grows interesting fruits. These fruits are round and bumpy. They are about one centimeter wide. They start as red-green capsules.

How Seeds Are Released

Inside each fruit, there are three sections. Each section holds a seed. When the fruit is ready, it splits open. It opens neatly into three parts. This action releases the seeds. This process is called dehiscence.
