Early Life and Family
Billy McCray was born in Geary, Oklahoma. In 1951, he married Wyvette M. Williams. They had several children together. One of his children, Melody McCray-Miller, later became a politician herself. She followed in her father's footsteps by joining the Kansas House of Representatives.
Political Career in Kansas
Billy McCray began his political journey in Kansas. He first ran for office in 1966. He won a seat in the Kansas House of Representatives. He served in the House for three terms, which means he was elected three times.
Moving to the Kansas Senate
After serving in the House, McCray decided to run for a different office. In the 1972 elections, he successfully moved up to the Kansas State Senate. He represented the 29th district in the Senate. He served three terms there, just like he did in the House.
