Early Life and Career Beginnings
Billy Newton-Davis grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, a town near Cleveland. When he was younger, he was one of the two main singers in a local soul band called The Illusions.
Later, Billy worked as a singer and dancer on Broadway, which is famous for its live shows in New York City. In 1980, he moved to Toronto, Ontario, in Canada.
Music Success and Awards
Billy Newton-Davis released his first album, Love Is a Contact Sport, in 1986. This album was a big success! It won a Juno Award for best R&B/soul recording. The Juno Awards are like the Grammy Awards for Canadian music. This album also had popular songs like "Deeper," "Right Beside You," and "Find My Way Back."
In 1989, he released his next album, Spellbound. This album included his biggest hit song in Canada, "I Can't Take It." It also featured a special song called "Can't Live With You, Can't Live Without You" which he sang with the famous artist Celine Dion. Spellbound also won a Juno Award for best R&B/soul recording, just like his first album.
Joining The Nylons and Later Work
In 1991, Billy Newton-Davis joined a popular Canadian singing group called The Nylons. After leaving The Nylons, he focused mostly on writing songs for other artists. He also continued to perform live jazz and gospel music.
Billy also lent his voice to several songs by the electronic music artist deadmau5. These songs include "All U Ever Want" and "R My Dreams" from the album At Play Vol. 2. In 2008, he won another Juno Award for All You Ever Want as the Best Dance Album.
