George Bingham Arbuthnot (born December 2, 1803 – died May 30, 1867) was a high-ranking officer, known as a Major-General, in the Honourable East India Company. This company was a powerful British trading company that also had its own army and ruled large parts of India for a long time. Arbuthnot spent much of his career serving in India.

Early Life and Military Start

George Bingham Arbuthnot was born in 1803. Before joining the army in India, he served in the British Royal Navy. In 1821, when he was about 18 years old, he joined the 3rd Madras Light Cavalry. This was a cavalry unit, meaning soldiers who fought on horseback, based in the Madras region of India.

Serving in India

Arbuthnot spent many years serving in India with the East India Company. He held various important positions. His career showed his dedication to the military service.

Leading the Governor General's Bodyguard

One of Arbuthnot's key roles was commanding the Governor General's Bodyguard in Madras. He led this special unit from 1841 to 1853. The Governor General's Bodyguard was a very old and respected unit. It was first formed in 1778. Its job was to protect the Governor General, who was the highest British official in India. This unit was originally made up of European cavalry soldiers.

Later in his career, Arbuthnot also commanded the 8th Madras Light Cavalry. He led this unit as a lieutenant-colonel from 1856 to 1861. By the end of his service, he had reached the rank of Major-General in the 3rd Madras Light Cavalry.

Later Life and Family

George Bingham Arbuthnot was the son of Alexander Arbuthnot, who was a bishop. He also had two half-brothers who were notable figures: Alexander John Arbuthnot and General Charles George Arbuthnot.

In 1829, George Bingham Arbuthnot married Harriet Louisa Ormsby. He passed away in Bath, Somerset, England, in 1867.
