Bird Island, also sometimes called Bird Islet, is a small island located in Alaska, United States. It's part of the City and Borough of Juneau. This tiny island is found off the eastern shore of Favorite Channel.
Discovering Bird Island
Bird Island is about 2.4 miles (3.9 km) northwest of a place called Pearl Harbor. It is also about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of the main city of Juneau. The island itself is quite small, measuring only 0.1 miles (0.16 km) across.
Who Named Bird Island?
The island got its name from Captain Lester A. Beardslee. He was a captain in the United States Navy. Captain Beardslee named the island in the year 1880. The name "Bird Island" was first officially written down and published in 1883. This was done by a group called the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Later, its name was also recorded by the United States Geological Survey. It was officially added to the Geographic Names Information System on March 31, 1981.
