What is Bishop, Illinois?

Bishop is a quiet place in the state of Illinois, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or village. Instead, it's usually managed by the county it's in, which is Mason County for Bishop.

How Bishop Started

Bishop began its story in 1875. It was first set up as a station along the Peoria, Pekin and Jacksonville Railroad line. Railroads were super important back then for travel and moving goods.

The community was named after Henry Bishop, who owned the land where the station was built. Imagine a train stopping right where his property was!

The Post Office and Beyond

The first post office in the area was opened in 1869. It was originally called Bishop's Station. Later, in 1883, its name was shortened to just Bishop. This made it easier for people to send and receive mail.

Today, Bishop is also home to the Zion Cemetery. This cemetery is a place where people from the community and surrounding areas are laid to rest. It's a quiet spot that holds a lot of local history.
