About Bishop Lamont's Music Journey

Early Life and Starting Out

Philip Brandon Martin was born in Inglewood, California, on October 31, 1978. He started rapping when he was 13 years old. His passion for music grew as he got older.

Meeting Dr. Dre and Signing a Deal

Bishop Lamont met the legendary producer Dr. Dre while they were filming a music video for another rapper, The Game. Dr. Dre was very impressed with Bishop Lamont's talent. After praising him on a radio station in Los Angeles, Dr. Dre signed Bishop Lamont to his record label, Aftermath Entertainment, in 2005.

Even though he was featured in The Source magazine's "Unsigned Hype" section, Bishop Lamont had already signed his record deal by the time the magazine came out.

Music in Video Games and Movies

Bishop Lamont's music has been featured in many popular video games. You can hear his songs "True Crime" and "Let's Get It Poppin" in the game True Crime: Streets of LA.

His tracks "The Best" and "We Got Next" were included in sports games like Madden 2007 and NBA Live 06. Another song, "I'm a Soldier," appeared in NFL Street 2. His song "City Lights" was also part of the racing game Midnight Club: Los Angeles.

Beyond games, Bishop Lamont's song "Welcome to Havoc" was the title track for the 2005 film Havoc, which starred Anne Hathaway.

His Own Record Label

Bishop Lamont also has his own record label called Diocese Records. He runs it with his music group, War Doggz. This shows his dedication to creating and sharing music.

Working on Detox and Other Projects

Bishop Lamont was featured on Dr. Dre's highly anticipated album, Detox. Dr. Dre once said that Bishop Lamont, along with Eminem, was one of the few rappers whose strong and meaningful lyrics made him think deeply.

Bishop Lamont released a mixtape called N*gger Noize on March 2, 2007. He described it as a "street album." He also worked on other projects, including The Impossible Possible, which was planned to be fully produced by Dr. Dre and Scott Storch.

In 2005, Bishop Lamont contributed to seven songs on Warren G's album, In the Mid-Nite Hour. He also released Caltroit 2: Metropolis, which included music not on the first Caltroit mixtape. He appeared in music videos for Busta Rhymes' "We Made It" and Kardinal Offishall's "Set It Off".

Leaving Aftermath Entertainment

In January 2010, Bishop Lamont decided to leave Aftermath/Interscope after five years. He said it was a friendly split and that he still has a good relationship with Dr. Dre. Bishop Lamont explained that after waiting for five years for his music to be released, it was unfair to his fans, his family, and himself to keep waiting. He left with over 700 songs he had recorded there.
