The Story of Bitter Creek

Bitter Creek began in the early 1880s. Two families, the Bardwells and the Montgomerys, were among the first to settle there. Experts believe Bitter Creek was located south of a town called Sweetwater. This area is in the northeastern part of Nolan County.

A big event happened in 1923: oil was found in Bitter Creek! This discovery often brought many people and new businesses to a town. However, by the 1950s, the town had almost vanished. Only five people were left living in Bitter Creek. This is why Bitter Creek is now known as a ghost town – a place where people once lived, but now no one does.
