Black Caviar (born August 18, 2006 – died August 17, 2024) was an amazing Australian Thoroughbred racehorse. She was famous for winning every single one of her 25 races! This included 15 big races called Group Ones, which is an Australian record. She was named the World Champion Sprinter four times in a row, from 2010 to 2013.
Black Caviar was trained by Peter Moody in Melbourne. For most of her races, her jockey (the person who rides the horse) was Luke Nolen. She retired from racing on April 17, 2013, as a true legend.

About Black Caviar
Her Early Life
Black Caviar was born on August 18, 2006, in Nagambie, Victoria, Australia. She grew up on a farm by the Goulburn River. Later, she was sold to Peter Moody for $210,000 at a special horse sale.
She was owned by a group of people, including G. J. Wilkie and K. J. Wilkie. Her father was a horse named Bel Esprit, who was also a winner. Her mother, Helsinge, didn't race but came from a family of strong horses. Black Caviar was a strong horse, weighing about 570 kilograms (that's like 1,250 pounds!). She stood 16.2 hands tall, which is quite big for a racehorse.
Her Amazing Racing Career
Black Caviar started racing when she was two years old. She won her first race easily by a long distance. As a three-year-old, she kept winning, even after a small stumble at the start of one race. She had to take breaks sometimes because of minor injuries, but she always came back stronger.
When she was four, Black Caviar became a true superstar. She won her first Group 1 race, the Patinack Farm Classic, by a huge margin. People started calling her "the best" horse they had ever seen. She continued to win many more Group 1 races, often beating other top horses like Hay List. She was so fast that she set new race records!
Winning Streak Continues
As a five-year-old, Black Caviar kept her winning streak going. She won her 14th race in a row, matching a record set by another famous horse named Phar Lap. She then won her 15th race, and her 16th, and so on! She became known for her incredible speed and power.
Racing in England
In 2012, Black Caviar traveled all the way to England to race in the famous Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. This was her first time racing outside Australia. The trip was long, and she even wore a special suit to help her blood flow!
The race was very exciting. Black Caviar won, but it was a close finish. Her jockey, Luke Nolen, thought she had won easily and eased up too soon. Another horse, Moonlight Cloud, almost caught her! After the race, it was discovered that Black Caviar had a muscle tear. This showed how tough she was to still win with an injury. She returned to Australia to rest and recover.
Breaking Records
In 2013, as a six-year-old, Black Caviar continued her winning ways. She won the Lightning Stakes for the third time, breaking a course record that had stood for 25 years! She was also honored by being inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame while she was still racing, which is very rare.
She won her 14th Group 1 race, matching another record. Then, on April 13, 2013, she won the T J Smith Stakes, making it her 25th win in a row and her 15th Group 1 victory! This broke the Australian record for the most Group 1 wins by a horse.
Life After Racing
On April 17, 2013, Black Caviar officially retired from racing. Her trainer, Peter Moody, said that 25 wins was a perfect number for her amazing career. Soon after, a life-sized bronze statue of her was put up in her hometown of Nagambie.
After retiring, Black Caviar became a mother. She gave birth to her first foal, a filly (baby girl horse), in 2014. She had several more foals in the following years. Her first foal, named Oscietra, also became a racehorse and won her first race in 2017!
How Good Was She?
Experts rated Black Caviar as one of the best racehorses in the world. She was known for her incredible speed and her ability to win every race she entered. She is considered one of the greatest sprinters (horses that race over short distances) of all time.
Sad News
On August 17, 2024, Black Caviar sadly passed away. She developed a serious illness called laminitis, which affects horses' hooves, and she was put to sleep to prevent her from suffering. She died just one day before her 18th birthday. Black Caviar will always be remembered as an undefeated champion and a true legend of horse racing.
