Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Black Jack is a small, unincorporated community located in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

History

The area around Black Jack is known for an important historical event. In 1856, a conflict called the Battle of Black Jack took place nearby. This battle was part of a larger struggle over whether Kansas would become a free state or a slave state.

The community of Black Jack itself was founded in 1857. It was named after a nearby stream called Black Jack Creek. The creek got its name from the many Blackjack Oak trees that grew along its banks. For many years, Black Jack had its own post office, which opened in 1858 and operated until 1895.
