The Black River is a river in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a state in the United States. It is about 29.8-mile-long (48.0 km), which is roughly the distance of a marathon! This river eventually flows into Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes.

Where the Black River Flows

The Black River starts from a place called Goose Lake. This lake is located in the northeast part of Republic Township. From there, the river flows mostly southeast. It travels through Humboldt Township before reaching Ely Township. In Ely Township, the Black River joins the Middle Branch of the Escanaba River. After that, its waters continue their journey all the way to Lake Michigan.

Rivers and Lakes that Join the Black River

Many smaller streams and lakes connect to the Black River. These are called tributaries because they contribute their water to the main river. Think of them as smaller branches joining a bigger tree trunk.

  • Tower Lake
  • An unnamed stream (a stream without a specific name)
    • Nirish Lake
