Blackwell, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Blackwell is a small, unincorporated community located in the state of Missouri, United States. It's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

What is Blackwell?

Blackwell is a quiet community found mostly in Washington County. A small part of it also stretches into the northern section of St. Francois County. It's a rural area, meaning it's mostly countryside with homes spread out.

Where is Blackwell Located?

This community is situated in eastern Missouri. If you were driving, you'd find Blackwell about seven and a half miles south of a larger town called De Soto. Its location puts it in a scenic part of the state.

How Did Blackwell Get Its Name?

The name "Blackwell" has a history that goes back to the early settlers of the area. The community was named after two important people: Lavinia Blackwell and Margaret Blackwell. They were among the very first people to settle and build a life in this location.

Early Days and the Post Office

For a while, the community was known by a slightly different name: "Blackwell Station." This name likely came from a train station or a stopping point in the area. In 1858, a post office was opened there, and it was officially called "Blackwells Station." Later, in 1885, the name was simplified to just "Blackwell," which it remains today.
