Blanche Huber (born around 1900 – died 1940) was a very important person in Malta. She was the first woman to become a doctor in Malta. She was also the first known female student to study medicine at the University of Malta. Blanche Huber graduated as a doctor in 1925. Even though she was a doctor, she worked as a pharmacist in the town of Żejtun.
Early Life and Education
Blanche Huber was born in Birkirkara, Malta. Her father was named Joseph Huber. Later, she married Dr. Joseph Caruana, who was also a medical professional.
In October 1919, Blanche Huber became one of the very first female students at the University of Malta. She started her medical studies that year. Another woman named Tessie Camilleri also enrolled at the university around the same time. Blanche worked hard and completed her studies. She earned her degree as a doctor in 1925.
Career and Legacy
After finishing her studies, Blanche Huber chose to work as a pharmacist. She practiced her profession in the town of Żejtun. Being the first female doctor in Malta was a big achievement. It opened doors for other women who wanted to study medicine.
Blanche Huber passed away on 19 July 1940. She was about 40 years old. To remember her important contributions, a street in Sliema is named after her. It is called Blanche Huber Street.
