Bloomingdale is a small community called a hamlet. It is located in the town of St. Armand, in Essex County, New York, United States. Bloomingdale has its own postal code, which is 12913.
History of Bloomingdale
Bloomingdale became an official village in 1852. At that time, it was a very busy place for cutting and selling wood, known as the lumber business.
Even though the lumber business slowed down in the 1900s, Bloomingdale stayed active. It is located right on the Saranac River. Also, five roads meet there, including New York State Route 3. This made it an important spot for people and trade.
Today, Bloomingdale has an elementary school and a general store. You can also find an antique shop and a restaurant there. Many of these places have been part of the community for a long time. The Town Hall is where local government meetings happen. It also hosts many community events.
In 1985, the people living in Bloomingdale voted. They decided to end the village government. So, in 1992, Bloomingdale officially stopped being a village. It went back to being a hamlet.
An interesting fact from 1900: A man named Daniel Seckington built a nine-hole golf course. It was part of his hotel, the Waverly House. This was one of the first golf courses in Essex County.
