Blue Riband is a tasty chocolate biscuit that has been a popular snack for many years. It's made with a crisp wafer covered in a thin layer of milk chocolate. Today, it's produced by a big company called Nestlé.

Discovering Blue Riband

Blue Riband is a type of chocolate biscuit that combines a crunchy wafer with a smooth chocolate coating. It's designed to be a light and satisfying treat.

How Blue Riband Started

The Blue Riband biscuit was first created in 1936. It was launched by a company called Gray Dunn. Gray Dunn was a major biscuit maker in Scotland. At that time, Gray Dunn was part of a larger sweets company called Rowntree's. The original Blue Riband was known for its thin layer of real milk chocolate over a crisp wafer. Gray Dunn also made another similar wafer biscuit called Caramel Wafer.

The Biscuit's Journey and Changes

Over the years, Blue Riband has changed a bit. The biscuit is now smaller than it used to be. Its packaging has also changed from a cellophane wrapper with a blue bow to a sealed sleeve. The chocolate layer on the modern version is sweeter and thicker. The biscuit itself is also not quite as crisp as the very first ones.

Where Blue Riband is Made Today

For many years, Blue Riband biscuits were made at the Gray Dunn factory in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1994, Nestlé closed the Glasgow factory. Production then moved to Newcastle in England. Nestlé took over Blue Riband when it bought the Rowntree's company. In April 2017, Nestlé announced that the production of Blue Riband would move to Poland.

Facing Other Chocolate Treats

Blue Riband has a main competitor in the snack world: the KitKat bar. KitKat is also made by Nestlé, which bought Rowntree's in 1988. Both biscuits are similar, with wafers and chocolate. The popularity of KitKat was a big reason why Blue Riband was redesigned. Blue Riband was re-launched in December 2004 to compete better in the market.
