The Blue River is a small but beautiful river found in the South Island of New Zealand. It flows entirely within the amazing Mount Aspiring National Park. Even though it's on the eastern side of the main mountain range, the river is part of the West Coast area.

Discover the Blue River

This river is known for its clear, blue water. It's a popular spot for visitors who want to see New Zealand's stunning natural beauty. The Blue River is a great example of the wild rivers found in the Southern Alps.

Where Does the Blue River Start?

The Blue River begins high up in the Southern Alps. Its starting point is near a mountain called Eyetooth. As it flows, smaller streams join it. These include the Blue River North Branch and the Blue River South Branch.

The Blue Pools Walk

One of the most famous parts of the Blue River is the area called the Blue Pools. These pools are named for their incredibly clear, blue water. They are a very popular spot for a short walk.

The Blue Pools are located where the Blue River meets the Makarora River. A bridge crosses the Blue River here. From the bridge, you can see amazing views. You can look upstream into a narrow gorge. You can also look downstream where the Blue River flows into the Makarora River.

Exploring the Blue Valley

If you enjoy longer walks, there is a track called the Blue Valley tramping track. This track goes deep into the Blue River Valley. It follows most of the river's length. This allows you to explore more of this beautiful natural area.
