The Board of Studies was an important government group in New South Wales, Australia. It worked from 1990 to 2013. Its main job was to guide education for students. This included students from Kindergarten all the way to Year 12.
They created the curriculum, which is what students learn in school. They also gave out official school certificates. These included the Record of School Achievement and the Higher School Certificate. These certificates are very important for students finishing high school.

What the Board of Studies Did
The Board of Studies had a big role in education. They made sure that students across NSW learned the right things. They also made sure that tests and exams were fair.
Developing the Curriculum
The Board of Studies was in charge of the school curriculum. This means they decided what subjects students would study. They also decided what topics would be covered in each subject. This helped make sure all students in NSW got a good education.
Awarding School Certificates
When students finished different stages of high school, they got certificates. The Board of Studies was the group that officially gave out these certificates.
- The Record of School Achievement was for students who finished Year 10.
- The Higher School Certificate (HSC) was for students who finished Year 12. The HSC is a very important certificate for getting into university or finding a job.
Becoming BOSTES
The Board of Studies worked for many years. But in 2014, things changed. On January 1, 2014, the Board of Studies joined with another group. This other group was called the NSW Institute of Teachers.
Together, they formed a new organization. This new group was named the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW. People often called it BOSTES for short. BOSTES continued the important work of guiding education in New South Wales.
