Robert Lewis Burns Jr. (born November 24, 1950 – died April 3, 2015) was an American drummer. He was a founding member and the first drummer for the famous Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Southern rock is a type of rock music that mixes rock and roll with blues, country music, and a bit of gospel music.

Bob Burns's Early Life and Music

Bob Burns was born in Gainesville, Florida, on November 24, 1950. He loved music and became a drummer. In 1964, when he was just 14 years old, he helped start a band that would later become Lynyrd Skynyrd. He formed the band with his friends Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, and Larry Junstrom.

Playing with Lynyrd Skynyrd

Bob Burns was the drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd from 1964 until 1974. He played on some of their very first recordings. Sometimes, another drummer named Rickey Medlocke also played drums with the band, especially during live shows. This was like some other bands, such as The Allman Brothers Band, who also used two drummers.

Bob Burns played drums on Lynyrd Skynyrd's first two official albums. These albums were called (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) and Second Helping. These albums became very popular and helped make Lynyrd Skynyrd famous.

In 1974, Bob Burns left the band.

Later Performances

Even after leaving the band, Bob Burns sometimes joined his former bandmates for special events. In 1996, he played drums to help promote a movie about the band called Freebird: The Movie.

On March 13, 2006, he played with Lynyrd Skynyrd one more time. This was a very special event because the band was being added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He played alongside other band members like Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Ed King, and Artimus Pyle.

His Passing

Bob Burns passed away on April 3, 2015. He died in a car crash in Cartersville, Georgia.
