William L. "Bobby" Robinson (born October 25, 1903 – died May 17, 2002) was an American baseball player. He was famous for playing in the Negro leagues. Bobby Robinson was known as the "Human Vacuum Cleaner." This nickname came from his amazing ability to field the ball at third base. He could catch almost anything that came his way!
Who Was Bobby Robinson?
Bobby Robinson was a talented baseball player from Alabama. He played during a time when African American players were not allowed to play in the major leagues. Instead, they played in their own professional leagues, known as the Negro leagues. These leagues had many incredible athletes, and Bobby Robinson was one of them.
Early Baseball Days
Bobby Robinson started his baseball journey playing for semi-pro teams. He played with the Mobile Tigers alongside other future Negro league stars like Satchel Paige and Ted Radcliffe. A semi-pro team is one where players might get paid, but it's not quite a fully professional league yet.
After playing for the Mobile Tigers, Bobby moved on to the Pensacola Giants. It was there that his skills caught the eye of scouts from the Indianapolis ABCs. In 1925, he officially joined the Indianapolis ABCs, starting his professional career in the Negro leagues.
A Star on the Field
Over the next eight years, Bobby Robinson played for several different teams. He showed off his incredible fielding skills at third base. His nickname, "Human Vacuum Cleaner," perfectly described how he seemed to suck up every ball hit near him.
Some of the teams he played for included:
- The Birmingham Black Barons
- The Chicago American Giants
- The Memphis Red Sox
- The Detroit Stars
Bobby Robinson played baseball until 1940, making a big impact with his defensive talent. He retired from the sport in 1942. Bobby Robinson passed away on May 17, 2002, at the age of 98. He is remembered as one of the great fielders of the Negro leagues.
