Robert Ryan, born on October 23, 1961, is a famous Irish hurler. Hurling is a fast-paced sport played with a stick and ball. He played for his local club, Borris-Ileigh. He also played for his county team, Tipperary. Bobby Ryan was the captain when Tipperary won the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship in 1989. He is known as one of the best players of his time.

Early Life and School Success
Robert Ryan grew up in Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary. His family had a long history with hurling. His father, Tim Ryan, and his uncles, Ned Ryan and Pat Stakelum, were also great hurlers. They won All-Ireland championships with Tipperary between 1949 and 1951.
Bobby went to Templemore CBS school. He was part of the school's senior hurling team. In 1978, his team won the Dr Harty Cup. They beat St Flannan's College in the final. Later that year, they also won the Dr Croke Cup. This is an All-Ireland championship for schools. They won by beating St Peter's College with a score of 2-11 to 1-04.
Club Hurling Adventures
Bobby Ryan started playing hurling at a young age. He played for the Borris-Ileigh club. By 1978, he was playing for the adult junior team.
His first big win with Borris-Ileigh was in 1981. They won the Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship. They beat Roscrea by 1-14 to 0-12. This was their first county title in almost 30 years. Bobby won a second county medal in 1983. Borris-Ileigh beat Loughmore–Castleiney 0-17 to 1-11.
In 1986, Borris-Ileigh won the Tipperary SHC again. Bobby earned his third winner's medal. They defeated Kilruane MacDonaghs 0-14 to 0-07. After this, he helped his club win the Munster Senior Club Hurling Championship. This was their first time winning the provincial title. They beat Clarecastle.
Bobby played as a left wing-back in the 1987 All-Ireland club final. Borris-Ileigh won the All-Ireland club title. They beat Rathnure by 2-09 to 0-09.
Playing for Tipperary County
Bobby Ryan started playing for the Tipperary county team as a minor in 1978. He played at this level for two years. In 1980, he moved up to the Under-21 team.
Under-21 Success
In his first year with the Under-21 team, Bobby won an All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship medal. Tipperary beat Kilkenny 2-09 to 0-14 in the final. He won a second All-Ireland Under-21 medal in 1981. Kilkenny was again the team they beat.
Senior Team Highlights
Bobby joined the senior team in 1980. Tipperary hurling was not doing very well at first. But Bobby's talent shone through. He won an All-Star award in 1986. All-Stars are given to the best players in Ireland.
In 1987, Bobby won his first Munster Senior Hurling Championship medal. Tipperary beat Cork in an exciting extra-time game. The score was 4-22 to 1-22. The next year, he won a National Hurling League medal. He also won his second Munster SHC medal.
Tipperary played Galway in the 1988 All-Ireland final. Bobby played at wing-back, but Tipperary lost 1-15 to 0-14. He earned his second All-Star award that season.
Captain and All-Ireland Glory
In 1989, Bobby Ryan became the captain of the Tipperary team. He led them to win their third Munster SHC medal in a row. Later that year, he captained the team to win their first All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship medal. Playing at centre-back, he led Tipperary to a big win. They beat Antrim 4-24 to 3-09 in the 1989 All-Ireland final. Bobby received his third All-Star award that year.
After losing their titles in 1990, Tipperary came back strong. Bobby won his fourth Munster SHC medal in 1991. They beat Cork 4-19 to 4-15. He then won his second All-Ireland SHC medal. He played centre-back as Tipperary beat Kilkenny 1-16 to 0-15 in the 1991 All-Ireland final. His brother, Aidan, also played in that winning team.
Bobby won his fifth and final Munster SHC medal in 1993. He stopped playing for Tipperary after they lost to Galway in the 1993 All-Ireland semi-final.
Playing for Munster Province
Bobby Ryan also played for the Munster team. This team is made up of the best players from different counties in the Munster province. He played in the Railway Cup four times between 1984 and 1991. He won his first Railway Cup medal in 1984. Munster beat Leinster 1-18 to 2-09. He won a second Railway Cup title in 1985.
