Bogart's Tavern was a famous meeting place in Buckingham, Pennsylvania. It opened around 1763. This old tavern became very important before the American Revolutionary War. It was a secret spot where people planned how to fight for freedom.

The Tavern's Early Days

An Irish man named Henry Jamison started Bogart's Tavern around 1763. By 1775, it was a busy place. It became the main meeting spot for a group called the "Committee of Observation". This group was strongly in favor of the American Revolution.

What the Committee Did

The Committee of Observation worked hard to support the revolution.

  • They made lists of people who supported the fight for freedom.
  • They also listed those who were against it.
  • The group organized boycotts of British goods. This meant people stopped buying things from Britain.
  • They even took guns from people who did not support the revolution. These guns were then used to create a company of soldiers in 1775.

A Key Spot in the Revolutionary War

Bogart's Tavern played a big role during the Revolutionary War. In September 1776, American troops faced a tough time. Major General Nathanael Greene and his soldiers had to retreat. They came back to Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

Washington's Secret Meeting

General George Washington was also in the area. He knew the tavern's location was risky. It was near people who were neutral or loyal to Britain. But on December 10, 1776, something important happened. Washington and General Greene met at Bogart's Tavern. They secretly planned a major attack. This plan was for the famous crossing of the Delaware River. This bold move led to a huge victory against the Hessians. This battle, known as the Battle of Trenton, was a turning point in the war.

After the War Ended

After the American Revolutionary War, the tavern was not as famous. People largely forgot about its important history.

Rediscovery and Recognition

Then, in 1913, a local historian made an exciting discovery. They found out how important Bogart's Tavern had been. This brought new interest to the old building. It was later made into a hotel called the General Greene Inn. The tavern also received a special Pennsylvania State Historical Marker. This marker helps people remember its role in American history.
