What's in a Name? (Etymology)

The name Bokobá comes from the Yucatec Maya language. In Maya, "Bokobá" means "splashing water."

Bokobá's History

Before the Spanish arrived, Bokobá was part of a region called Ceh Pech. After the Spanish took control, the area became part of a system called encomienda. This system meant that Spanish leaders were in charge of groups of native people. In 1700, a person named Esteban Pérez Montiel was responsible for 481 native people in Bokobá.

Yucatán became independent from Spain in 1821. In 1825, Bokobá was placed in a coastal region with its main office in Izamal. Later, in 1900, Bokobá became the head of its own municipality, which is the local government area that still uses its name today.
